Prisoner Escort and Custody Services
In 1995, Reliance was appointed by the Prisoner Escort and Custody Services (PECS) department to manage the PECS contract for South Wales and South West England. In November 2003, Reliance were also appointed by the Scottish Executive to provide prisoner escorting services across the whole of Scotland.
Reliance is responsible for:
- The collection from prisons and police stations, within the contract areas, of all detainees due to appear in court.
- Their delivery to courts both within and outside the contract areas.
- The secure management of custody areas in courts, within the contract areas, and the production of prisoners before the courts.
- The return of convicted persons to prisons at the end of the court day.
- Transport and escorting of detainees and prisoners for a range of visits such as to hospital.
In partnership with NOMS and the Scottish Prison Service, Reliance delivered 420,000 detainee transports annually. This involved employing over 1,600 officers operating 400 specialised vehicles from 18 bases across 22 police services, visiting up to 230 pollice custody centres, 59 prisons and over 50 mental health institutions to move arrested people to over 280 courts daily.
